TELL MAR ELIAS / KEDEM GUIDE
Mar Elias Church
Tell Mar Elias · Ajloun
First Kings identifies Elijah only as a Tishbite of Gilead. The association of Tell Mar Elias with his homeland is a later Christian tradition, not a conclusive archaeological identification.

1 Kings 17:1 (homeland tradition)
Tell Mar Elias is a Byzantine church complex in the hills of Gilead near Listib, northwest of Ajloun. Local Christian tradition associates it with Elijah's homeland, but neither Scripture nor archaeology establishes it as his birthplace or residence.
Biblical context
First Kings 17:1 introduces Elijah as ‘the Tishbite, of the settlers of Gilead.’ Identifying Listib with ancient Tishbe belongs to tradition rather than a conclusive archaeological proof. The site's strongest focus is therefore not a provable birthplace but Elijah's calling from Gilead to speak God's word with courage.
History and tradition
Two Byzantine churches, mosaics, and Greek inscriptions survive on the hill. They show that later Christians commemorated Elijah here; they do not provide archaeological proof of Elijah's life or activity at the site.
Pilgrim reflection
Elijah bore witness to the living God even before a king. Ask where you are called to obey truthfully and courageously today, fearing God's word more than the response of people.
On-site notes
Ajloun's highlands are cooler than Amman and can be rainy or foggy in winter. The ruins are outdoors on uneven ground, so wear walking shoes. The stop combines well with Ajloun Castle or Umm Qais on a northern itinerary.
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes, water, a hat and sunscreen, a windproof or rain layer, and modest clothing for the church ruins.
